The Ghost in the Shell by Shirow Masamune

Major Motoko Kusanagi is a Japanese woman leading a specialized strike force in Section 9. They take on cyber-terrorists. This is likely the definitive cyberpunk comic and it offers a bold vision of the future, where human bodies are able to be largely or entirely robotic as robots are becoming more human, and the lines are beginning to blur. And where hackers can hack into your mind.

It was adapted into a beloved animated film in 1995. The comic is serial in nature, with each episode focusing on a different Section 9 case. The movie is a faithful adaptation, but aims for a single narrative, by expanding one of the stories regarding the Pupeteer and tying other stories into it. It’s a great film.

And, it must be stressed, Major Kusanagi is Japanese.

A new live action film from Hollywood appeared recently. Scarlett Johansson plays Major Motoko Kusanagi.

Maybe you should just read the comic instead.
